Visual Dendrochronology

PAST is a graphical software package for Dendrochronolgy research and Archaeological dating purposes, containing tools and functions for the aquisition, manipulation, analysis and presentation of dendrochronology data.

Ease of use

The most recent version, PAST5, is the result of 15+ years of development and interaction with our customers. The use of the software by many laboratories and individuals all over the world and the feedback we receive from our users may be evidence that the visual concept of a dendrochronology software based on graphs and aided by statistical tests introduced with PAST2 in 1998 comprises a rather easy access to dendrochronology research and lowers the inhibition threshold many people have when it comes to statistical software packages.

Instead of trying to implement just about anything you might need we concentrated on keeping the use of the program as easy as possible while offering the Option to easily import from or share data with other programs for further analysis.

While PAST4 introduced the direct import function for ITRDB data and an easy to use raw data import function, PAST5 also supports the Tellervo web Service and TriDaS files.

Based on standards

PAST uses a project based approach to handle and store data. Dendrochronological records and their relations are stored in single files that allow for easy portability of data. By using a worldwide accepted open file format standard (XML) for PAST projects we ensure that data is not buried in files but can be accessed by many other programs, even Internet browsers.

The graphical display of ring width data remains the core of the PAST software.


In PAST5 the graphs can be sized and ordered in any way you choose. The graph types and combinations thereof (YT-Graph, Bar-Graph, Stacked YT-Graph, Skeleton and replication plots) are freely selectable and scalable. It is easily possible to display data in an YT-Graph and simultaneously open a second YT-Graph with different display settings or record filters.


One of the most sought after features demanded by PAST4 users was the display of minima values in the Stacked YT graph. With PAST5 a mean value line and the minima accentuation can be selected as screen options in the Stacked YT graph. This is an invaluable help when checking for correctly synchronized positions between records.

Visual data editor

Editing the raw data of a record is a tedious and error prone job. The new visual ring width data editor comes to your rescue!

PAST5 introduces an exciting new feature: Version Copies make it is possible to work with several different data sets for any given record and allow for lossless data editing.

Speed – It´s your time

The new multisync assistant is a valuable tool when it comes to mass synchronization operations. Modern computers  have a lot of number crunching power that often waits idly to be finally used. PAST takes full advantage of  the latest multicore CPU architecture and performs time critical operations as paralleled multithreads. Waiting for synchronization results is a thing of the past!

Portable – Your license to go


The USB license key
PAST5 was developed with portability in mind. The software can be installed on an unlimited number of computers or copied to an external USB storage device. The license you receive when buying the program resides on an USB license key that will activate the program as soon as you connect the key to a certain PC.
